Del Marqués de Valdehoyos House
The Marqués de Valdehoyos House is located in Cartagena, Colombia; on Factoría Street, is one of the most representative’s examples of the Cartagernera Colonial Houses.
The House is a two floor house with a mezzanine, court yard, backyard, designated as flour storage and servants rooms, the house itself takes place in the upper floor where the big saloon with terraces to the streets is located. This residence typically colonial belonged to Valdehoyos Marqués, a person who owns the privilege of import slaves and flour.
At Marqués de Valdehoyos House stands out: its eye catching facade, the windows with wood crosspieces finely carved and the central balcony.
To the interior the floors and the ceiling were made in wood. Nowadays the National Tourism Corporation functions there. The manner is used in cultural events, conferences, exhibitions and receptions.
Its beautiful facade, wide stairs, shadowed galleries and its interior garden as well as the big saloon and the romantic belvedere are a sample of the good living along the colonial epoch of the beginnings of XVII century.
According to the historian in one of the rooms of the house Simon Bolivar himself was lodge in one of the rooms who in those days were ill and eventually died in Santa Marta on the Caribbean coast.
The double balconies are especially interesting, the mozárabe decoration in the ceiling of the principal saloon, the slaves dorms, the first floor stables and the watch point with its winkle shape stairs that offers a beautiful views of the sea and of the walled city, part of the French furniture are still preserved.
Del Marqués de Valdehoyos house was used as movies location in: “El amor en los tiempos del cólera” and “Del amor y otros demonios”.
