Del Caribe Museum in Barranquilla

Along April 2009 open its doors the first regional museum of Colombia: Del Caribe Museum, a space that rebuilt the history of this region and also represents for its visitors the cultural manifestations, the historic memoir of its inhabitants.

The Caribe Museum, is located in Cultural del Caribe Park, a modern complex of 22 thousand square meters in wide Barranquilla city historic center, it is a valuable place where the tourist could learn more about Barranquilla and the region, an encounter point for those lovers of the culture and history.

The Caribe Museum is an innovative proposal for the region, Colombia and the world. The main subject is the Colombian caribe in the environmental, social, historic and cultural areas. It offers an encounter place with the origins and provides elements to strengthen the identity and the rebuilt of the cultural history.

The museum displays more than an object collection, is a live culture museum, it is a space to rebuilt memories. The visitor will enjoy a series of experiences based in cultural expressions in an inspirational space.

The permanent exhibit covers five floors of the main building, and it’s organized in five theme exes: Nature, People, Words, Action and expressions. In each floor or saloon there are two exhibit strategies:

- One that emphasizes the sensory and other more didactical that will focus in the information, to keep the interest of the visitors that will enter to the second floor and take and elevator to the sixth floor where the tour starts.

The Caribe Museum has five thematic saloons:

Nature Saloon

It is dedicated to the region nature, and its ecosystems diversity, the singularity and importance of its ecology processes.

People saloon

This saloon tells the history of the people from the Colombian Caribe; a history of encounters and adaptations that along the time conform an ethnic and cultural diverse society.

Word Saloon

This museum saloon emphasize and celebrate the oral tradition and literary production richness of the Colombian Caribe, accentuating the importance of the expressions and multiple variations originated in the mixture and exchange with other towns of the country and the world along history.
Soon the Mediateca Macondo will be open for the public; a documentation center specialized in Gabriel García Márquez work.

Action saloon

This saloon tells the social, economic and politic history of the region as a result of the collective processes of ideals that became reality, the decisions that mark the future of the region and the action of the Caribbean population.

Expression Saloon

Once the top floor of the museum approaches it is possible to hear the sounds that come from this saloon. Here the Caribbean musicians with its instruments invites to the visitor to hear and dance its rhythms: bullerengue, chalupa, fandango, cumbia, porro, among others.
