VALLEY OF CAUCA

Cali Fair
The fair begins with a cavalcade where the most beautiful and fine horses of the country march past in the streets. There are many night festivals and popular celebrations in different places. The activities such as parades, sport events give entertainment to the fair.
In Cañaveralejo square there are bullfights where go the best bullfighters of Spain and America.

PASTO

Carnival of Blacks and Whites

The Carnival of Blacks and Whites was declared cultural heritage in April 2002. It is carried out from 4 to 6 January; many national and foreign tourists go to the carnival, since it is very interesting for its colourful and spectacular scenery.  The carnival has some phases:

  1. Pre- carnival: December 28, many people play with water.
  2. “El Carnavalito”: February 3, children make a parade with carriages.
  3. Arrival of Castañeda Family: January 4 Castañeda Family is commemorated. There are disguises of the family members as the extravagant grandmother, the daughter and Children.
  4. The Blacks Day: January 5, the African slaves are commemorated, for this purpose many people paint them in black.
  5. The Whites Day: January 6, there is a parade in commemoration to white people for this, many people dress up and paint each other in white.

CALDAS

Manizales Fair
The fair was originated in 1951 there were many bullfights, was declared cultural heritage in 2006. Actually is carried out in January from 7 to 14 in Manizales.
In the fair there are many activities such as musical folks, parades, orchestras, exhibitions, musical groups.

Riosucio´s Carnival
The carnival takes place on January from 2 to 8 in Riosucio- Caldas. It is a pagan festivity celebrated each two years, in the carnival people worship to a good devil with music, rhyming couplets, and allegorical groups and fancy dress parades.

Previous days to carnival the devil and its court arrive, they are received with musical bands and fireworks. It is completed with musical group contests, children parades, handmade fairs and bullfights.

There are many bullfighting fairs in Medellín, Cartagena and Bogotá.

BARRANQUILLA

Barranquilla Carnival
It is one of the biggest carnival in the World, after Rio de Janeiro one, is celebrated the second week of February. It was declared cultural heritage in November 26, 2001.
The cultural event begins with a carriage parade. Then, it is carried out “"La Gran Parada"; people put on its festival clothes and go out to the streets. After that, there are orchestra festivals. Finally a simulation of Joselito Carnival takes place.

BOLÍVAR

Nuestra Señora de Candelaria Festivity
Nuestra señora de la Candelaria festivity is the most important in historical and cultural development of Bolivar department. It characterizes by freights export.
The traditional festivity begins with a mass in honour to Virgin, and then it is celebrated with cumbias, dances, and the best of the Cartagena gastronomy.

International Film Festival
The international film festival carries out in March in Cartagena, where many films of different countries compete in varied categories as full length film, short film and more.

BOGOTÁ

Iberoamerican Theatre Festival - Bogotá
It is one of the biggest festivals of scenic arts where the most important companies of the world participate. It has a great amount of plays and has duration of 17 days.
The programme offers theatre spectacles, dance, circus and pantomime, created by companies of five continents. More than two million of spectators assist every year.

SAN ANDRÉS

Green Moon Festival
This festival is held annually in San Andres Island, whose characteristics shows islands history as colonization and other historic facts.

CÉSAR

Vallenato Legend Festival
It is a great culture celebration in Valledupar, capital of Cesar department. It is carried out in April from 26 to 30, in the festival there are presentations of Merengue, Paseo, Cuya and Son.
The festival is a friendship ritual, last more than two days; where there are many musical groups.

International Culture Festival - Tunja
The international festival, the best expression of the culture takes place in Boyacá- Tunja. In the festival there are many exhibitions of art,theather,rock, jazz and tango presentations.

GUAJIRA

Wayuú Culture Festival – Guajira
The Wayuú Culture festival is celebrated in Uribia town. It is the main cultural event of Guajira.
It is carried out every year to enhance and conserve customs, traditions, culture and folklore. Many cultural activities like dancing contests, oral presentations, handmade exhibitions, horse rates, sport events and cultural events about Wayúu culture are carried out.

VALLEY OF CAUCA - CALI

Mono Núñez Festival- Ginebra –
It is carried out in June from 14 to 17, many artists pay tribute to music of Andean region. The activities of the event are: Musical Instrument fair; autochthonous expressions and Square Festival.

HUILA

Folkloric Festival and National Reign of Bambuco
This festival began in honour to San Juan Bautista saint. It is one of the biggest celebrations in Colombia. Neiva, the capital, work on preparations for giving welcome to hundred of tourists. For this purpose, there are many dancing presentations and folkloric parades.

AMAZONAS - LETICIA

Festival de la Confraternidad Amazónica (Festival)
This festival is carried out on July from 15 to 20, to promote the cultural, gastronomic, folkloric and sportive integration. Among the activities, we can observe the international fishing championship, football championship; there are also, dances and musical events that reflect the cultural richness of Colombia. In this important event the Amazon basin countries participate and other countries participants too.

It is a national celebration, many civic acts are carried out as: musical presentations, parades, cultural activities, etc.

MEDELLÍN

The Festival of Flowers
August is the flowers month. Medellín is full of flowers; its main event is called “Desfile de Silleteros”.

Desfile de Silleteros (Flower carriers’ parade)

 It is a great flowers fair; more than 80 varieties of flowers are harvested to elaborated figures with flowers. In the parade, we can observe art of elaborating beautiful flower figures of different colours and forms.

BOGOTÁ

Bogotá Carnival
The events take place in Simón Bolivar Park the fifth and sixth of August. The carnival includes many activities as musical groups, night festivals, children carnival, etc.

International Fair of Bogotá

AMAZONAS - LETICIA

Festival de la Música Pirarucá de Oro (Music Festival)
The festival is carried out in November in Leticia, in “concha caústica” of park. There, many compositors and musicians participate, reflecting the cultural identity.

Desfile de Muñecos de Años Viejos ( Parade)
The parade is carried out from November to December. People enjoy playing with water and flour. There is disguises parade of famous, national and foreign politicians; the peculiar disguises are the main attraction.

META

Folkloric and Tourist International Festival of Llano 
The festival takes place in San Martin, has forty one years of tradition. The participation of many folkloric groups reflects Colombian culture. Many musical groups take part in this event.

VILLA DE LEYVA

Festival of Lights

Every year on December 8, is celebrated the candles day in Villa de Leyva. The festival begins in Christmas season. It is a spectacular festival with fireworks; the main square is full of colourful lights.

Cali Fair

The fair takes place in Cali on December 25 and 30 is also called Sugar Cane Fair and Salsa Fair; there are activities as cavalcade, orchestras’ contests, and selection of fair’s music theme.
