Mitú city - Vaupés
Mitú the capital of the department, is an economic center, is located in the Amazon Jungle over the Vaupés River. The word “Mitú” comes from Yeral language which means “paujil”, a bird from the western region of Colombia.
It was founded the 10th of November in 1935 by Miguel Cuervo de Araoz, when it was only a “caserío”. It was the meeting point for indigenous communities, also for gaucho and furs exploitation. Then, it became council city and capital of Vaupés.
There are several ethnic groups close to this city whose traditions are very interesting. The Ceima community is one of the most important populations and lives among cachiveras (small springs).
Cultural Tourism
Mitú is the perfect place for cultural tourism. The native cultures stand out in this place; other characteristics are the cultural and natural attractions. It is possible to appreciate streams, “cachiveras”, salt marshes, hills and so on.
Flora and fauna
It characterizes by flora and wild fauna biodiversity. The forests are characterized because of its species. The flora is very beneficial for indigenous communities and for local population. It is used for medicine, wooden provision, cooking, decoration and others for industry (oils, resins, fibers, colorings).
Mitú is also rich in fauna, there are 586 wild fauna species and 96 fish species whose are benefit for communities, who used as food, for rituals, as medicine and for musical instruments manufacture or in cultural traditions. Among the most important fauna are: dantas, cerrillos, deers, churucos (furry monkey), paujiles, parrots, guaras (species of toucans), etc.
