Mocoa city - Putumayo
Mocoa, capital of Putumayo, well known as “ciudad señorial”, is located to the south, is the administrative and the centre of numerous organizations. At north, it borders with Nariño, Cauca and Caquetá River which divides to Caquetá department.
The main economic activities depend of the commerce, the agriculture, the cattle farming, the fishing and the provided services. In the agriculture, there are more productions of corn, yucca, banana, sugar cane and rice. The agriculture has increased the last years, producing meat, milk and its derivatives.
The climate in Mocoa is varied, because of the latitude, the altitude, the wind, and so on.
Tourist attractions
Mocoa is characterized by its peculiar beauty, among the tourist attractions are Santander Park, surrounded by palm trees from Africa brought by Jaime Igualada father. The Loma is other attraction where people can have panoramic views to the city.
Close to the mouth of Mandiyaco and to Cauqetá River, in the border between Putumayo and Cauca, along more than 500 meter on Caquetá River, there are immense rocks forming strange labyrinths where the running waters pass hardly.
Churumbelo Hill
Churumbelo is a mountainous region, situated near Mocoa, covers over12.000 hectares. There were a lot of stories and myths about the Churumbelo. The rivers and the vegetation make it a mystery place.
Churumbelo Waterfall
It is located to the east of Mocoa, on the mountainous region. In the zone, there are many ancient civilizations vestiges of Ingas family, who lived long years ago.
Junquillo
At north, an indigenous village of Inga lives. People who visit this community will appreciate the colonial chapel located in a square surrounded by houses, making it a cultural attraction.
Rumiyaco River
It is located to the south of Mocoa, is formed by many wells where people will enjoy its waters. It is possible to arrive by car in 6 or 10 minutes, or walking in half hour.
Mandiyaco River
It is at the northeast of Mocoa, bordering with Baja Bota Caucana, near the bridge that link to Putumayo with Cauca, by Pitalito, 15 minutes away, then walking 30 or 45 minutes.
It is a natural beauty; there are narrow strips which have entering and outflows where Mandiyaco waters go through. In the mouth, 500 meters away from there, there are immense rocks forming strange labyrinths or tunnels.
Hornoyaco
It is located to the east of Mocoa, in Churumbelo hill; along the road it is possible to appreciate varied vegetation. The route lasts 5 minutes by car and then walking 90 minutes to Hornoyaco gully. The waterfall is 60 meters high, falls by the gully forming a beautiful lagoon.
For arriving there, people have to go walking through a narrow road, and then enjoy the Hornoyaco warm waters.
Cultural events
Mocoa´s Carnival
Mocoa´s carnival, the major cultural expression, is southern ancestral tradition. The colonist people were from Nariño, brought traditions and costumes like Christmas celebrations and the Blacks and Whites Carnival, typical of Nariño department.
Since that time, those costumes were practiced; in 1970 the carnivals began to be organized by the board of directors. Ten years after, it was named Folkloric Mocoa´s Carnival, conserves the cultural identity of inhabitants, maintaining the Nariño roots. Nowadays, it is required to strengthen the carnival, taking into account the multiculturalism keeping its origins. In this way in 2002 the Culture, Tourism and Mocoa´s Carnival Corporation was created.
