San José de Guaviare city - Guaviare

Altitude 175 m.s.n.m.

San José de Guiviare is the capital of Guaiviare department, is located 400 Km. to the south of Bogotá city. Its territories are plain with rivers, the main ones are Guaiviare and Guayabero which are used as communication means with nearby villages. Most of the territory is covered with rainforest plenty of dense forests and natural savannahs.

On the river shores, many indigenous tribes like carijonas, curripacos, guayaberos and tucanos lived; they became skilful in gaucho export.

San José de Guaiviare economy depends of activities like fishing, agriculture and cattle farming.

How to arrive

It has an airport with III category, for arriving by air. The Satena and other small airlines have local flights.

The municipality is connected by the road that goes through Llanos Orientales to Villavicencio, then arriving to San José de Guaiviare with El Retorno and Calamar.
From Puerto Lleras municipality in Meta, it is possible to arrive to Guaiviare navigating by Ariari river, this one connect to Guayabero, near Concordia port Meta forming Guaiviare river, main artery of the department.

Touristy Attractions in San José Del Guaiviare

Las Delicias waterfall

It is a much visited touristy destination, because of the spectacular waterfall, which is 26 meters high. It is located 17 Km away from the city. There, it is possible to practice activities like climbing and rappelling. People can arrive to this wonderful place by van, motorbike and bicycle, a good way to have unforgettable moments, enjoying the adventure among the exuberant landscape.

Laguna Negra (lagoon)

La Laguna Negra, one of the most spectaculars of Guainia, is located in front of the named place Picapiedra. It is possible to arrive by Puerto Arturo road, and then through the detour, the trip lasts 20 minutes approximately. It has dark and deep waters, 900.000 square meters; there, many fish and aquatic species live among the green landscape.

Natural wells

There are natural wells that offer natural and spectacular landscapes, different color waters flow from through wells and subterranean caves.

Puentes Naturales

It is possible to arrive to this place in 20 minutes from San José. There are many paths; the natural bridges are formed on big slates. In the zone there are several caves, located under the big slates that are interconnected by the slopes of a canyon, with big rocks ordered in different forms. It is a wonderful place, one of the most beautiful in the mountainous region of Lindosa.

Ciudad de Piedra

It is located 20 minutes away from San José. They are old rocks ordered in a symmetrical way, similar to a city with streets and avenues. It is an interesting place whose beautiful landscape makes that visitor dream with the exuberant nature. There, it is possible to appreciate the Guaiviare flower, one of the most popular one, grows to 90 centimeters high.

La María y el Rincón de los Toros

La Maria is located 7Km. away from San José de Guaiviare. In this place, Las Lajas canyon flows, its waters go through savannah, forming natural beach resorts among dense forests.

El Rincón de los Toros is 15 away from San José. There, there are several water wells and waterfalls that proliferate to the rocks which are among the vegetation.

The Tunnels

The commonly known as Tunnels are very visited by archaeologies. It is a rock outcrop, located in Lindosa mountainous region. It is very interesting observe how the labyrinths among the rocks form caves, passages that impress to the visitor. It is the prefect place to camp, has clear waters that incite to the visitor to swim; the surrounding landscapes are worthy of admiration, especially for taking photos to the beautiful dusks.

Puerta de Orión

La Puerta de Orión is an impressive rock, 12 meters high and 15 meters long, has semicircular shape and two superimposed entrances. It is very interesting to see the labyrinths, caves and cornices. From there, people can see the savannah, and walk or climb by the natural bridges and tunnels. Many birds nest and live inside tunnels, making this place more interesting.

Cave paintings

They are big pictographies next to archaeological remains, were made with pigments on the rock walls. It is estimated that the authors were people of Amazon cultures from 1.000 years ago.
