This district is located in the Amazonic region of Colombia. Its main activities are fishing and forest exploitation.
Vaupés is a mysterious green flat covered by a jungle that is 50.000 Km. long. It contains exuberant landscapes, rivers, vegetation and many other species of aquatic Amazonic fauna.
Mitú
Mitú is the capital of the district. It is an economical center which is situated in the Amazonic jungle over The Vaupés River.
The word “Mitú” comes from The Yeral Language; it means Paujil, a wild bird from the western region of Colombia.
There are several ethnic groups close to this city whose traditions are very interesting. The Ceima community is one of the most important populations.
Tourist attrations
Raudal de Jirijirimo
It is close to The Apaporis River. This amazonic jungle contains amazing falls which form a unique torrent. Such torrent is divided in two parts that will form a new fall called “La Cama de la Anaconda” (The Bed of the Anaconda) because of the quantity of serpents that live there.
The weather is hot and wet. The best time of the year to visit the place is from December to January.
El Raudal de Yurupari
This is an afluent of The Vaupés River. It forms a six meter cascade. The temperature is 27°C during daytime and it is a little bit more cold during nightime. A Catholic school is placed there where it is possible to pass the night.
