Girardot city - Cundinamarca

Girardot, municipality of Colombia, is the second most important city of Cundinamarca department, is located in the center of the country, on the Magdalena River´s shore.

It is called “The city of the Acacias” because of the beautiful trees that contains.  It is a very important tourist center thanks to the weather, the geographical position, its port, natural attractions and the tourist infrastructure.

Many sport activities can be practiced in the zone: climbing, ecological walkings and nautic sports in different places like The Magdalena River, The Island of the Sun, The Caverns, The Vacational Centre El Peñón, The Viewpoints and El Arbolito.  

Girardot has a pleasant weather, adequated for summer holidays, is warm dry with average temperature from 17ºC to 30ºC.

How to arrive

By plane, from Flandes municipality where is located Santiago Vila airport, the charter flights arrive from Bogotá.

Another way to arrive to Girardot is by bus; the city has a Terminal of Transportation where the buses that pass along Panamerican road that connects Cali with Bogotá arrive. From Bogotá, Ibagué or Neiva, you can take a bus with Girardot destination

If you want to arrive by car, you can arrive by different routes:

- By Panamerican road that crosses by Fusagasugá and Melgar

- By road of Waterfall of Tenquendama or by La Mesa road (It lasts 1.5 and 2’5 hours approximately).

- From Ibagué by Panamericana road in Espinal (It lasts from 4 to 5 hours)

- From Honda by Magdalena road that crosses by Amero (It lasts from 4 to 5 hours).

Tourist attractions

Magdalena River

It is the main fluvial area of the country and a natural historical attraction of Girardot, where you can do activities like navigation, traditional fishing and so on.
It was discovered by Rodrigo de Bastidas in 1501, the native known it as Yuma which means Friend River. On the river shores there were fairs of aborigins.

Bridge Rail

It is one of the biggest attractions of the city, from there; you can have wonderful views to the river and the city. You can also appreciate Ospina Pérez Bridge and Flandes city.

Isla del Sol (island)

It is located to the south of Magdalena River. They are stone islands among a natural landscape, is the perfect place for relaxing yourself among the exhuberant nature. It has a soft sand beach; for arriving to this place, you should take a launch or boat trip from the Tourist Pier.

The Happiness Train or touristy train

Take a trip inside this small train and have a pleasant moment with your family. The route takes you by the railroad which was witness of powerful locomotive carrying great quantity of freights.

Viewpoints

Alto de Las Rosas: It is a spectacular place where you can have spectaular views of Magdalena river, with the central mountain chain as background.

La Morada del Viento (The Wind Dwelling): It is an spectacular place for having panoramic views of Girardot, appropiated for taking pictures. In winter, it is possible to appreciate the exhuberant vegetation.

Cerro del Arbolito Viewpoint: From this place, it is posible to appreciate Girardot. You can have long walks to the hill, observing the natural lanscape and taking pictures.

Tourist attractions in the city

Plaza de Mercado de Leopoldo Rother (square)

It is located in San Miguel square, considered National Monument because it belongs to the most modern architecture in tropical places.

Bolívar Park and Square of Railroad

They are the meeting point of citizens, tourists, looking for fun, since it has comercial and crafts fairs.

Commerce Center Divider

Long ago, it was called Wide Street, is the main highway of Girardot, where it is carried out the economical activity of the city. It is the scenario of political demonstration and sportive spectacles as the international athletic race of Giradot City.

El Peñón

It is the most traditional and vast condominium of Giradot; where the most espectacular modern houses are located, is strictly protected by safety guards and has security measures for entering.
