Facatativa city - Cundinamarca

Facatativa, Cundinamarca´s municipality is located on road Bogotá-Villeta-Honda-Medellín. It is the fourth city of Cundinamarca in population and is 42Km from Bogotá.

Its name means “Enclosured at the end of plain” in Chibcha language. It has an industrial infrastructure for the region development and is projected as an appropriated city for new investors in Cundinamarca.

It is characterized by its abundant water; the main rivers are Botello, Subachoque and its gullies like: Mancilla and San Rafael.

Climate

The climate depends from the latitude and the altitude. It has two dry seasons: one from July and September and other in December and February. It also has two raining seasons: March and June, and September and December. The average temperature is 13ºC.

How to get to Facatativa

Panamericana: It connects Facatativa with Santa Fé de Bogotá and Madrid Mosquera, Funza, Albán, Guayabal de Siquica, Villeta, Guaduas municipalities and the northern departments.

Vía Rosal-Street 80: It connects with Santa Fé De Bogotá and Subachoque, Tenjo, Chía, Tenjo, Zipaquirá, and La Vega municipalities.

“Centro Histórico”

It has old constructions around a catholic church. The most representative buildings are placed on the surroundings of Simon Bolivar square. They have conserved a valuable architectonic heritage; they are big houses with heavy large doors, interior courtyards, big solar rooms, thick walls and different styles façades, and balconies in their doors and windows.

Tourist Attractions

“Piedras de Tunjo” Archeological Park

It is the main attraction of Facatativa and tourist destination for foreigners. It is also known as “Las Piedras de Tunjo”. It was declared Archaeological National Park in 1946. Inside, there is a lake, (you may rent boats that can hold up to eight persons).

In the park, it is possible to appreciate big metamorphic rocks, probably result of the intense pressure of the land. The rocks are scattered irregularly on the park. Some of them are sufficiently big to be climbed with ropes and harness. Many people practice climbing in the zone.

The rocks were the spiritual place for Muiscas, some of them represent cave paintings and geoglyphs that probably are old rituals, and it is asserted that some of them have 10.000 years.
