Carmen de Atrato city - Chocó

Carmen de Atrato is a municipality of Colombia, located in Chocó department; it was founded in 1874 by Luis Alberto, Sixto Ramirez, Adriano Toro and others who arrived looking for farming lands. Its area is 791Km2 and the average temperature is 18ºC.
The municipality name is due to a promise to El Carmen Virgin by the health of one of the settlers’ daughter and in honor to Atrato River that crosses by the territory.
Its economy depends on the agriculture, the cattle farming, the mining industry and the commerce. The main cultivations are banana, coffee, coconut, and maize. The silver, gold and platinum exploitation is also important for the economy. The most outstanding activities in the municipality are connected with farming and mining products sale.
Its territory is plenty of exuberant mountains from which the water springs, is formed by beautiful paths, nice and noble people, and landscapes that invite you to contemplate the natural beauty of the municipality.
The municipality is the cradle of the Atrato river, which springs from the Farallones del Citara, this beauty municipality is the proud of Chocó department, is known by its copper mines and by its festivities; The Wise Men from January 2 to 6 and El Carmen Virgin from July 7 to 14.
Boundaries
The municipality borders at north on Quibdo and Antioquía departments, at east on Antioquía, at south on Bagado and Lloró, at west on Quibdó.
How to get
It is possible to get by bus from Medellín in Antioquia department, from our capital Quibdo, the arrival is by bus, if you prefer a line named Carmeleña.
Cultural Events
- Agricultural fair – first Sunday of each month.
- Festivity of El Carmen Virgin - yearly festivity from July 12 to 16.
- Feast of the Wise Men – from January 4 to 6.
