Soledad is a Colombian municipality, belongs to Atlántico department and forms part of the metropolitan area of Barranquilla.
It borders at north on Malambo district, at east on Magdalena department and at west on Galapa.
The Magdalena River is a main natural resource of Soledad which covers the landscape of the oriental limit, provides all its ichthyologic potential.
The municipality characterizes by the great conglomeration of industries that develop its activities as the pharmaceutical and the thermoelectric.
History
Soledad foundation dates back to 1598, when the captain Moreno Estupiñan took 8 indigenous for establishing a pig’s farm and built a hut of 45 meters long and 24 meters wide, 83 corrals and 63 hog farms. Little by little, this place turned into a hamlet of “free neighborhoods”. In 1640 Melchor Caro processed the legal foundation of the settlement, La Porquera de San Antonio that in 1743 had the category of parish. It was inaugurated on January 20, 1744, with the name of Soledad. In 1813, it was considered village and in 1824 was designed seat of the third canton of Cartagena province.
