Malambo is a municipality located to the north of Atlantico department. It is on the oriental shore of Magdalena river and is one of the five cities that form part of the metropolitan area of Barranquilla. It covers an area of 10 Km.

It borders at north on Soledad, at east on Magdalena River, at the west on Galapa and Baranoa municipalities, at south on Sabanagrande and Polonuevo.

How to get

By plane: through Ernesto Cortizos airport
By land: It connects with Barranquilla and Sabanagrande through oriental highway.
By river: through Magdalena river.

Tourism

It is a plain city watered by Magdalena River, where activities like the cattle farming and the agriculture represented by cotton, rice, millo and yucca. By its proximity to Barranquilla, it has been important center of industrial establishments.

The main attractions to visit are:

• A main square, the main point of the municipality development.
• Santa Maria Magdalena is a church declared historical heritage.
• Buildings with architectonic and historical features that would be declared cultural heritage in the future.

History

By the time the Spanish arrived in 1959, in the charge of Jerónimo Melo, the most important settlement of the region was found, which has the name of the cacique Pedro Malambo who had the control. In 1533, Don Pedro de Heredia arrived to Malambo and get ecstatic with the handicrafts made by the indigenous inhabitants. This village demanded its evangelization, was in charge of San Luis Beltrán under the mandate of Antonio López Ayala from 1562 to 1569. It is important to mention that Malambo was the third important city in Tierra Adentro.

In 1857, it got the category of municipal district, but in 1885 it went down to “corregimiento” category. In 1912, it was named municipality. Nowadays, it is one of the four municipalities of the metropolitan area of Barranquilla.
Its economy depends on Barranquilla, the capital, given the circumstances, because of the weakness of the socio-economic activities.

In the view of this situation, it is required to improve resources associated to the tourist and recreational activities contribute to start profitable alternative activities that contribute to create an economic basis with further consistence and redistributive sense towards the population.
