Puerto Nariño municipality is located in the Colombian Amazon, frontier with Peru, on the bank of Loretoyaco river, tributary of Amazonas, is 87Km from Leticia, capital of Amazonas department.
It is the second municipality of the department, both in importance and area. Its economy depends on ecotourism, fishing and subsistence products cultivation.
Its population is 5.490 inhabitants, 1.818 of them live in the urban area and 3,672 in the rural area, forming indigenous communities of ethic groups as Tikuna, Cocama and Yagua.
Puerto Nariño municipality is appropriated for eco tourism, inside its territory; Tarapoto Lake is placed, natural habitat of pink dolphins of the Amazonas, unique specie in the world. It is also called “Pesebre Natural de Colombia”. It was founded on August 18, 1961. At east it borders on Leticia, at west on Peru, at north on Tarapacá and at south on Amazonas River.
How to get to Puerto Nariños
By land, it is possible to get from Bogotá to Leticia, Amazonas capital, or from Manaos (Brazil) to Tabatinga, Brazilian neighbor city.
By land, among the jungle, there are ecological paths that connect the downtown with the indigenous villages.
By river, Amazonas River connects with Leticia downstream and upstream with Caballococha, Peruvian village, by Loretoyaco River upstream it is possible to get to Indigenous Villages.
